The attack on the convoy of chief of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) Tuesday left 6 persons killed and four others injured, police said. According to SSP Imran, focal person of Sindh police, armed assailants, riding six motorbikes, sprayed the convoy of Aurangzeb Farooqi, chief, ASWJ with bullets near Moti Mehal in the limits of Gulshan Iqbal police station.

Resultantly, ASWJ chief and eight others sustained bullet injuries and were rushed to two different hospitals where four cops, a driver and a private guard succumbed to their injuries. He said the ASWJ chief was travelling in a double-cabin car (CN-0840) with a police van (SP-7339) when the vehicle came under attack. He said the victims have been identified as police constable Arshad Khan, PC Waheed Khan, PC Imran, a police van driver Saleem, a guard Ubaid-ur-Rehman and double-cabin driver Abdul Wakeel.

Following the attack, tension prevailed in many parts of the city where miscreants took to streets and burnt tyres to vent their anger. They also torched a mini bus at F B Area and suspended all commercial and social activities in several parts - New Karachi, North Karachi, Soldier Bazar, Gurumandir and Gulshan Iqbal. Replying to a question, Imran said it was premature to say anything about the attack. Investigation had been initiated to ascertain the facts behind the attack and nobody has so far approached police to register FIR in this connection.

Meanwhile, ASWJ spokesman Maulana Akbar Saeed Farooqi told Business Recorder the condition of ASWJ chief was stable while four others lost their lives in the attack. Condemning the attack, he demanded of the authorities to take the responsible persons to task. He said the ASWJ will observe mourning day in Sindh, especially in Karachi on Wednesday (today) to express resentment over the attack.

Meanwhile, Transport Ittehad has extended its support to ASWJ for observing mourning day and announced that it will not ply public transport on Wednesday. Tuesday proved to be a deadliest day in the violence-hit city where overall 20 persons lost their lives in just a single day.

An activist of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) fell victim to firing incident at Chishti Nagar in the limits of Iqbal Market police station. SHO Sabir Khattak said the deceased, who was identified as Nadeem Akhtar, 36 son of Naseem Akhtar, was the active worker of MQM Unit 118. No case was registered till filing of this report. Another man namely Muhammad Shahid Hussain, 24 son of Mubarak was gunned down at his meat shop located at Rais Amrohi Road. SHO Sabir said the deceased was resident of the same area and belonged to Shia sect.

One Haider son of Ghulam was shot dead in the limits of Orangi Town police station. Police said the incident took place at Islam Nagar located in Sector 12-L, Orangi Town where the victim was targeted. They said the deceased might have been murdered over sectarian ground as he had affiliation with ASWJ. No case was registered till filing of this report. A son of DSP Aurangzeb lost his life in an armed clash took place late Monday in the limits of Dharakshan police station. Police said they had registered a case against some persons, who were nominated by the DSP Aurangzeb.

A man, who was said to be worker of one of religious parties, succumbed to his injuries in police custody. Police said the workers of one of religious parties took to streets after the attack on ASWJ chief and resorted to heavy firing near Imam Bargah Shah Kazmeen in Sector 11-G, New Karachi.

In retaliation, one of the miscreants identified as Zainul Abideen, 28 son of Muhammad Siddiq sustained bullet wounds and was nabbed by cops. The police sources said the injured instead of being shifted to hospital was transported to the police station that caused his death.

Two more persons namely Rosy Khan, 40 son of Ispahan and Naimat Khan, 25 son of Khuda-e-Noor were killed and Atique sustained bullet injuries in the limits of Brigade police station. Police said they might have been killed over personal ground. No case was registered till filing of this report.

Five tortured bodies were recovered at several parts of the city including Shersha, Gulshan Iqbal, Napier, Kharadar and Metrovile areas. Police said only one body, which was recovered from Napier, was identified as Naveed Butt son of Nazeer Butt while rest of the others remained unidentified.

In another firing incident, 26-year-old Shiraz son of Haji Muhammad Aslam was killed while his younger brother Ayaz was injured in an armed clash at Green Town in the limits of Shah Faisal police station. Police said that they had taken two suspects namely Tariq and Sher-Awal from the scene and registered a case against them. They added that these persons were engaged in an armed scuffle over some petty issue. Another 17-year-old unknown man was gunned down near Civil Hospital in the limits of Eidgah police station. Six persons identified as Tariq Azeem, Sabir Khan, Zahid, Aaitebar Gul, Irfan and Farhan were injured at Landhi, Dhobi Ghat, Frontier Colony, Gulshan-e-Hadeed and North Karachi areas, respectively.
